The Voluntary Registration Council (VRC)
The Voluntary Registration Council (VRC) will be the governing body
ensuring that potential registrants meet the required standards. The
application forms are scrutinized by the Registration Council for
Cytotechnologists (RCC).
The RCC has produced standards of proficiency and a code of conduct,
and is comprised mainly of Cytotechnologists. The formation of a voluntary
register is necessary for successful state registration. Even in the
event of an unsuccessful application the register could raise the
profile of Cytotechnologists, identifying those in the profession
determined to raise standards and provide confirmation of a desire
to demonstrate the commitment of Cytotechnologists and provide evidence
to this effect.
Julie Thomas is the NAC / RCC representative on the VRC and states
"I have been employed as a Cytotechnologist (Cytoscreener) for 16
years and have been dismayed at our lack of recognition as a professional
group.
We are among the most heavily scrutinised groups of workers within
the NHS, receiving mandatory training and external assessment at regular
intervals.
The maintenance of consistent standards of education, training, conduct
and performance throughout the profession ensures that all Cytotechnologists
provide high standards of care to their patients.
I believe that it is extremely important that Cytotechnologists are
therefore recognised as a registered professional group of workers
and I am totally dedicated to the pursuit of this goal".
